Whiplash injuries sustained in bus accidents
For many of us, public transport is the most practical method of transport, which successfully manages to take us from A to B without any problems. But with billions of bus journeys being made every year in the UK, it seems inevitable that that some passengers will be involved in an accident and suffer personal injuries such as whiplash.
Bus accidents occur as a result of many possible causes including driver fatigue, adverse weather conditions, and poorly maintained road surfaces. Road accidents can have devastating effects on passengers, causing them serious, if not permanent injuries, which may have been prevented if better safety precautions had been implemented.
Seatbelt laws
In 2001, a law was passed which made it compulsory for buses used on or after the 1st October to be installed with fitted seatbelts by their manufactures. However, this law focuses primarily on long haul journeys and excludes buses travelling in urban areas, leaving millions of passengers at risk from suffering injuries in road traffic accidents.
If passengers are not restrained correctly when a road accident occurs they will be exposed to a number of personal injuries. Therefore, it seems questionable that seatbelts are provided for school trips but not for bus journeys to school on the village bus.
Bus accidents in the news
In 2006 a number of people suffered passenger injuries whilst they were onboard bus 253, which crashed into a disused pub in London. The double-decker bus veered off the road and crashed into the Cecil Arms, causing injuries to many of those onboard. Casualties were taken to hospital and treated for their road accident injuries including whiplash. Those involved in the crash could be eligible to make a compensation claim through a personal injury solicitor.
A pensioner from Birmingham who also sustained whiplash injuries in a bus accident decided to launch a campaign pleading with officials to "bring back bus conductors". The grandmother sustained a painful neck injury when the bus she was travelling on mounted a kerb and forced her to be thrown off her seat. It is not believed, however, that she contacted a personal injury solicitor requiring her to make an accident compensation claim.
Bus accidents such as these could have been prevented and so it is important that any injured person, who has sustained passenger injuries in an accident, should contact a compensation solicitor to discuss making a claim.
