School trips, bush crashes and whiplash claims
We can all remember how exciting going on a school trip was when we were a kid. A whole day out of the classroom, a chance to eat sweets and run amok, oh and of course, an opportunity to fill our little heads with some new sort of knowledge.
But in all that hyperactive excitement did whiplash ever cross our tiny minds? It's doubtful. We were probably far too busy gobbling Opal Fruits and Monster Munch, vomiting into the teacher's sick bucket or rolling around in E number-induced hysteria after watching a giraffe defecate at the zoo.
It's probably a good thing that we were so preoccupied with enjoying ourselves that we failed to think about the potential risks involved with our jaunt away from the classroom. I guess that getting eaten by a lion was a slight possibility but far more likely was being involved in coach crash whilst on the way to wherever we were going.
Luckily, it never happened to me, although the weird kid (every class has one) did once try to leap out of the emergency exit door whilst we were tearing along the motorway. He, fortunately or not, failed in his bizarre bid for freedom but if he had been splattered on the tarmac then there's no doubt that serious personal injuries and compensation claims would have been the result.
Compensation claims
Compensation claims and school trips are two things that are inextricably linked and there's no getting away from the fact. If you release your child into the care of someone else then you expect them to be returned to you in the condition in which you left them.
School trips are a perfect example of this and there have been numerous instances of parents being forced to make accident claims following an injury to their child. Many of these personal injury claims have been the result of a bus or coach crash that has left their little ones with whiplash.
Thousands of youngsters are ferried back and forth in buses every day, both on school trips and on the journey to and from school. When these vehicles are involved in road accidents, as they invariably are, the large number of young passengers on board means that personal injuries, especially whiplash, are all too common.
More than just whiplash
But it's not just whiplash that children involved in bus accidents suffer from; death and serious personal injury are also all too common. A brief search through the internet's news archives will reveal a whole host of coach accidents that have caused pain and heartbreak to families all over the UK.
Among them have been a 2004 crash which saw one child die and several severely injured when the bus taking them on a school trip to Barcelona overturned in France. Other notable examples include a similar accident in Germany a year later that claimed the life of a Suffolk boy, as well as a horrifying 1996 incident that saw the roof of a Lancashire bus sliced off when it collided with a low bridge.
Children have suffered whiplash injuries in all of these accidents and it's likely that numerous compensation claims have been made by parents. It is sometimes only the threat of legal action that encourages some unscrupulous bus and coach operators to guarantee that their drivers are fully qualified and that the safety of their passengers is ensured.
