Whiplash research can be assisted with a new vest
A new vest which can assist with whiplash research has been developed to gain more clarity on the impact of whiplash on people with chronic symptoms.
Dr Michele Sterling, a world-leading researcher in the Whiplash Research Unit of the University of Queensland, said that although many people who've suffered whiplash during a car accident recover shortly afterwards, some neck distress continues for months and even years.
"Little is known about how the whiplash condition impacts on the ability to engage in normal work, rest and play that most of us take for granted," she said.
The current study uses new technology at a level rarely seen in clinical research studies to date.
The life shirt is a lightweight Lycra vest hidden beneath the usual clothes of the person being studied. It monitors their physiological condition (including the heart-rate and perspiration levels), posture and movement patterns. The person being analysed is asked to wear the vest for one day only.
During the same day, all participants in the research group are asked to maintain an "electronic diary" to describe factors like pain levels and other symptoms.
Participants must have neck pain as a result of whiplash from a car accident which occurred more than three months previously and less than five years previous to that. The study has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of Queensland.
The University of Queensland (UQ) has been pioneering whiplash research for some time and has a world-class reputation for its research activities. The latest development should provide more information about posture and movement patterns following a whiplash personal injury. Read more at www.uq.edu.au
