Euro NCAP and new anti-whiplash crash testsNew anti-whiplash crash tests will soon be introduced in all EU Member States. But what is the organisation that will be carrying out the tests, Euro NCAP, all about?
Euro NCAP has been around for 10 years and aims to give consumers a realistic and independent assessment of the safety performance of some of the most popular European cars. Established in 1997, the organisation is backed by five European governments, the European Commission and motoring organisations across the EU. By law, all new car models must pass certain safety tests before they're sold, including whiplash protection standards. While legislation provides a minimum statutory safety standard for new cars, Euro NCAP encourage manufacturers to exceed these requirements.
Euro NCP crash tests provide detailed information about safety standards
Legislation sets out safety standards but Euro NCAP provides more detailed information about the implementation of those standards, through crash test results for example, that will be of help to consumers. It is an international organisation which falls outside the motoring industry and so can more strongly be a critic of it. Recent test additions include front and side impact and anti-whiplash restraint tests. The latter is to see how new designs for seats, headrests and seatbelts intended to reduce whiplash are performing. Manufacturers who produce samples of designs to work on this condition are now under the spotlight to see whether their hypothetical solutions actually work in practice.
These tests are the latest development in new models of 'smart' cars which may be able to tell us how to get to a particular destination, when your car needs to be serviced and which automatically corrects seat and headrest positions to accompany sudden whiplash neck movements in the driver.
