Suffered a whiplash injury in a driving accident that wasn’t your fault? We can help you get compensation
A car accident can be traumatic enough without the added inconvenience, pain and misery of also suffering from a personal injury. Time off work, hospital appointments and severe discomfort normally result, and this can be even more galling if the accident was due to no fault of your own.
The most common result of a modern car accident is a whiplash injury, and tens of thousands of Britons succumb to this painful and distressing symptom every year. Caused by the soft tissue in the spine being stretched and strained when the body is thrown in a sudden, forceful jerk, it is possible that a whiplash injury can cause long-term neck problems that are difficult to treat.
Luckily, the majority of people who suffer from a whiplash injury find that the pain and discomfort does disappear relatively quickly, leaving them with no more permanent damage than a dented car and the hassle of an insurance claim. But if you have been involved in a car accident, look out for headaches and stiffness in the neck and the back of the head; the chances are that you’re suffering from some degree of whiplash injury.
Protecting yourself from a whiplash injury
Today’s car designers are making efforts to protect the driver from a whiplash injury by using a range of technologically advanced impact reactive headrests and specially designed seats. Volvo and Saab are leading the way in developing this technology and recently came out way ahead in a range of safety tests. Other car manufacturers, however, are now beginning to realise the importance of safety measures to prevent a whiplash injury, and are slowly starting to follow Volvo and Saab’s lead.
As a driver you can take your own measures to protect yourself from a whiplash injury in the event of a car accident:
- The top of your ear should be slightly below the top of the headrest.
- The distance between the headrest and the back of your head should be 5-10cm (2-4 inches).
- The top of the headrest should be at least as high as the top of your head.
So next time you get in your car take a look at your headrest and adjust it accordingly; you never know when it might be too late.
