Claim free compensation after suffering a whiplash injury
Formula One racing is undoubtedly one of the world’s most exciting and glamorous sports. Exotic locations, cutting-edge cars, beautiful pit girls and millionaire drivers all combine for a glitzy event that produces thrills, spills and unrivalled fast-paced action.
But the sport is not without its obvious dangers, and is strictly controlled by tight safety precautions that attempt to protect the drivers from personal injury. Despite the measures taken, tragedy does occur, and numerous drivers, including the great Ayrton Senna, have been killed in car accidents over the years, with many more finding themselves scarred and crippled for life as a result of their racetrack exploits.
The majority of drivers are not so unlucky, but until recently the threat of receiving a nasty whiplash injury was a very real, and often quite likely, possibility. Tremendous speeds, sharp turns and computerised braking systems mean that the driver’s body undergoes massive stress and unnatural gravitational force. As a result, whiplash injuries were traditionally common occurrences for Formula One drivers.
Preventing a whiplash injury
2003 finally saw the mandatory introduction of a safety device designed to make whiplash injuries among Formula One drivers a thing of the past. The HANS (Head and Neck Support) system consists of a carbon fibre collar worn around the driver’s neck, which is fitted under the shoulder belts of his safety harness and attached to his helmet.
In the event of a car accident or sharp braking, the energy absorbed by the driver’s neck and skull is dramatically reduced. As a result of this revolutionary piece of equipment, whiplash injuries in Formula One racing are becoming a thing of the past.
Domestic road car manufacturers are also beginning to see the advantages of installing measures to prevent whiplash injuries in their vehicles, and Renault have announced the introduction of a Sleep Safe system to protect children sitting in the rear seats. Based on a similar design to that used on the racetrack, it is intended to prevent the child suffering a whiplash injury should they be asleep when involved in a car accident.
