The 24-year-old made around £500 a time when he drove fraudster's cars and caused crashes by braking hard in front of unsuspecting motorists.
As liability for a rear-end smash usually falls to the driver behind, the crooks were then able to defraud insurance companies for personal injury compensation, netting an average of £17,000 each time.
After his arrest the 'cash for crash' scammer, a Bolton resident, admitted conspiracy to defraud, dangerous driving, and driving while disqualified. Along with the jail sentence he was banned from driving for three and a half years.
Reports suggest that the scam saw unsuspecting insurers cough up between £1.2 million and £1.6 million in hire car charges, damage repair bills and personal injury payments for whiplash injury compensation.
