The bill for whiplash claims in the UK is one of the reasons being attributed to an expected rise in the cost of car insurance premiums.
A spokesperson for the motor insurance division of the AA commented, "One thing that is certain is that the average premium will continue to rise, but by how much?
"Some commentators suggest a rise of 20 per cent over the next year and certainly, a rise of that magnitude will be necessary if the insurance industry is to achieve an underwriting profit.
"At present, for every £100 spent on premiums, insurers pay out approximately £105."
However, it is not only the growing cost of whiplash claims that are behind the anticipated rise. Experts estimate that £30 of the cost of the average premium goes towards paying for the cost of car crash claims for incidents involving uninsured motorists.
Whiplash claims themselves are thought to account for nearly £70 of the cost of every policy and cost nearly £2 billion each year.
*A replacement vehicle can usually be supplied within 4-6 working hours, where there is an admission of liability from the other person’s insurance company. If this person is not known, their insurance details are not known, they are uninsured or there is a potential dispute over who caused the accident, a replacement vehicle cannot be provided.
