Wrexham footballer plays on after Christmas car crash
A young Welsh footballer who escaped a potentially fatal car accident this Christmas Eve managed to retrieve his boots from the wreckage, and turn up for training and a Boxing Day fixture before he told his coach of the road traffic accident.
The teenager had been driving back to Wrexham following a quick visit to his Cardiff family when the crash occurred. He had been driving through an unlit section of road when his car tumbled down an embankment, flipping three times as it went. He smashed his way out of a window and returned to the road for help, seemingly uninjured; this was confirmed by an all-clear from the team.
His parents said, "We couldn't believe how calm he was. He was the strong person in it all. We all wanted to jump in the car and drive up there, but he insisted he was fine and he just wanted to get back to his house and go to sleep.
"Thank God he was OK and no-one else was involved. It's been a shock for us all, but Jon has been very, very lucky."
Wrexham's manager added, "Although he really should have said something beforehand, it's to his credit that he was determined to keep his place in the team He is lucky to be alive and is a great lad, who has done well for us since joining the club. This incident proves he is the type of player I want here, one who is 100% committed to the cause and trying his best in every game."
The result of the game that the car accident survivor played in was a one-all draw.
