Uninsured drivers, not whiplash claims, are to blame for the startling rise in the cost of motor insurance over the past year, according to many experts.
With some putting the number of uninsured drivers in the UK at around 1.7 million, one of Europe's worst records, it is easy to see why there has been a growth in the consensus that those who drive without insurance should be seen as the chief culprits in identifying the unjust causes of rising premium prices.
The figures make for stark reading: uninsured drivers add around £30 to the cost of the average premium, each year more than 100 people die in car accidents caused by uninsured motorists, and around 23,000 people suffer personal injury, many of whom go on to make a whiplash claim.
However, whiplash claims are also a significant burden on the purses of insurers. An Association of British Insurers report Tackling Whiplash claims that 20% of the amount people pay in premiums each year is being spent on settling no win, no fee compensation claims for the neck injury, adding around £66 to the price of an average policy.
