Top five worst areas for fraudulent car accident claims
People living in the North West of England are more likely to have to make a car accident claim for a deliberate accident caused by insurance fraudsters.
The top five "crash for cash" hot spots were announced by a car insurance company as areas in Manchester, Lancashire, Burnley and Stockport.
The crashes are often caused by fraudsters who make unnecessary emergency stops at busy slip roads or roundabouts, leading to innocent motorists crashing into them. The fraudsters consequently make inflated claims on the innocent motorist's insurance for personal injuries, such as whiplash, that they did not sustain.
Fraudulent insurance claims cost the industry £350m every year, which adds an average of £44 to premiums for honest motorists, while the scams also delay payouts on genuine claims.
As well as adding to the cost of insurance, false compensation claims also delay payouts to genuine car accident claim victims as any reported accident at a known scam site has to undergo additional investigations.
