Amputee unable to make car accident compensation claimA student, who has been unable to make a car accident compensation claim despite suffering injuries which led to her leg being amputated, has won a beauty contest in Nottingham. In November 2009, the 20-year-old woman was walking home from university lectures and was near a road junction when a van smashed into the back of a taxi which then crushed her against a wall, causing the life-changing injury to her lower left leg. Despite an operation to amputate the leg, the student was inspired by celebrity amputee Heather Mills not to allow the road traffic accident to dominate her life. Two months later she returned to her studies and in September 2010 entered the Miss Nottingham beauty contest. Parading in her wheelchair wearing a long pink dress, the woman was awarded the title of Miss Charity for gaining the most sponsorship and donations for a hospice as part of the competition. She is also a member of the Great Britain Sitting Volleyball squad for sports people with disabilities. Because the van driver who was responsible for the car crash did not stop, the woman has been unable to make an accident compensation claim against him through a personal injury solicitor in the usual way although she may be able to achieve recompense through the Motor Insurance Bureau which acts in such situations.
