Car accident woman honoured for bravery after a related stroke
A Scottish woman who suffered a stroke after a car accident has, this week, been honoured with a commendation for adult courage in the Life After Stroke awards, set up by the Stroke Association.
The woman's car crash occurred in 2003, while driving to Aberdeen from Dundee. Although her personal injury was initially considered minor, she slipped into a coma due to damage to her carotid artery, and the brain injury resulted from this blood flow problem.
Her husband said that "She came round after a few days but she didn't have any speech. She couldn't talk and walk. For the first week or two it was possible she wouldn't pull through."
However, her refusal to give in to the effects of the road traffic accident - relearning speech, movement, and driving in an adapted car - earned the attention of the Stroke Association, and ultimately this award.
Since her car accident, the woman, who previously worked as a speech and language therapist, has been using the services of a fellow practitioner, and has joined Speakeasy, a national charity founded to promote communication recovery.
