The IPCC is set to examine a car crash which left a police sergeant with whiplash injuries. The accident occurred in mid-January on the M4, near Swansea, and involved a powerful BMW 5 Series. No other cars were involved.
The report suggests that the whiplash victim may have been speeding at the time of the car accident, but acknowledges that there are circumstances under which police officers are permitted to drive above the speed limit. The investigation into this crash will investigate these circumstances.
The officer under investigation is known to have qualified through the police advanced driving scheme, and was alone in the car at the time of the accident.
An IPCC spokesman said, "The IPCC is managing the investigation into this incident following the voluntary referral of this matter by South Wales Police.
"The investigation will determine the facts in this case."
The officer in question is believed to be recovering from his whiplash, and made no comment.
