The actor Morgan Freeman has been hurt in a car crash in Mississippi this week, sparking rumours that the film The Dark Knight has left its stars with a curse.
The actor was driving a Nissan Maxima with a female passenger on a country highway when the car left the road for reasons that are, as yet, unclear. Both occupants received serious personal injury, although these may have been lessened as they were wearing seatbelts.
Emergency services arrived at the road traffic accident scene, and had to extract the actor and his passenger with cutters. Police said that there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs having played a part in the crash.
Witnesses said that Freeman was conscious, and may have broken several bones. He was airlifted to hospital in Tennessee.
A spokesperson for the actor passed on a message that he "says he'll be okay and is looking forward to a full recovery."
Claims for the existence of a curse on The Dark Knight centre on the death of Heath Ledger and the allegations against Christian Bale; the film's credits also pay respects to a technician who suffered a fatal work accident. This car crash is only likely to fuel the rumour.
