Man fakes car collision to win compensationA man has been ordered to pay back £200,000 road traffic accident compensation to his insurers after a judge ruled that the accident had been staged. The 49-year-old man from Sedbergh in Cumbria, still maintains that he was involved in a genuine collision with a car whilst riding his bike along the A683. He claimed that the accident, which took place in 1998, caused him to suffer personal injuries to his head and back as well as leading to him experiencing psychiatric side effects. However, it was later revealed that the driver of the car which had hit the claimant had been the best man at his wedding. It is alleged that the driver had been paid £700 by his friend to cause the personal injuries with a stick and to run the bike over. Despite claiming that it was a coincidence that he had known the driver, the car insurers who paid out the £200,000 in road traffic accident compensation sued the claimant for the return of the money and won the case. The man later went on to appeal against the verdict but his case, which was held at Manchester County Court, was rejected and he was ordered to repay the road traffic accident compensation after the judge deemed the collision to have been staged.
