L-drivers may risk road traffic accident with trainees
Learner drivers can be the cause of a road traffic accident, either through their own lack of skills or other drivers' impatience at their handling of the car in traffic, but now instructors are under fire too.
Up to one in eight of all driving instructors are believed to be training on the job with L-drivers being kept in the dark about their status and paying full fees for the lessons.
A survey of AA members resulted in 97% saying learners are entitled to be told if their teacher is learning on the job and the motoring organisation is asking for government action on the issue.
Officially, trainee instructors are required only to display a pink badge on the windscreen, a fact which very few drivers know, and schools can charge whatever they wish for the lessons.
Many AA members are concerned about the greater likelihood of a car crash involving a learner driver who is having a lesson with an unqualified teacher and if the training will equip them with sufficient skills to be safe enough to avoid serious injury in the event of a road traffic accident.
