The accident occurred when a car was attempting to drive around the horse and rider but misjudged the space and collided with the back of the horse.
The woman riding sustained only minor personal injuries due to the protective clothing she was wearing. Unfortunately, the horse had to be put down by a vet at the scene of the accident.
The driver who caused the accident carried on driving rather than stopping at the scene of the incident, which took place in November 2010. It was claimed that the driver stopped at a petrol station to look at the damage caused to the windscreen and later, when asked by his neighbor, blamed the damage on crashing into a tree.
The man was fined for driving without due care and attention at Central Devon Magistrates' Court and for not stopping at the scene of an accident.
