Poet and former Nobel Peace Prize nominee dies in traffic accident
Grigore Vieru, the man considered by many to be the leading Romanian language poet of the twentieth century, died this weekend following injuries he sustained in a car crash.
The car crash, which occurred in the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, happened on Friday; Vieru died the following Sunday and the Moldovan President, Vladimir Voronin, has declared Tuesday a national day of mourning.
Born in 1935, Vieru lived through turbulent political times and longed to see Romania and Moldova reunited following the annexation of the two countries by Soviet forces in 1930.
"Other people dream of traveling to outer space, I have always dreamed of crossing the Prut [the river marking the division between Moldova and Romania]," Vieru said in 1973.
In 1992 Vieru was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
So far media have not reported the details of the fatal car crash and it is to early to speculate whether his wife or two sons are considering personal injury compensation claims.
