Learner driver ploughs into schoolgirl at crossingThe parents of a young girl knocked over by a learner car in a road traffic accident are outraged as the driver has been told she can still drive. The three-year-old girl had been using a pedestrian crossing on Pytchley Road, Kettering in February when the learner driver went through a red light and drove into her. The schoolgirl was driven over by the learner's car after being thrown up into the air and hitting the floor. The road traffic accident left her with serious personal injuries to her head, a broken collarbone and severe burns to her arm and hand sustained from the engine exhaust as the car went over her. The girl was taken to Kettering General Hospital where she was forced to stay for two days. She still receives medical treatment and is waiting to undergo plastic surgery for the scars which were caused by the burn injuries. The learner admitted to driving without due care and also pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and supervision, however she was only fined £267 and given six penalty points on her licence, despite the horrific injuries the accident caused. Following the hearing, the father of the young girl injured in the road traffic accident spoke of his shock at the sentence given out to the driver.
