Doctor banned for fatal crashA doctor who caused a fatal car accident while driving a rented people carrier to a team bonding course has received a £5,000 fine and a three-year driving ban. However, the sheriff hearing the car accident case at the Scottish court decided not to send the doctor to prison. In making this judgement, he made it clear that he agreed with the defendant's solicitor that the woman killed in the collision would have survived had she not been morbidly obese. She "weighed 29 stone," said the solicitor. "Due to her size, she had a seatbelt extension. The seatbelt was almost cut through. The injuries would have been capable of recovery by someone who was not compromised in other ways. "Regrettably it was not possible, because of her morbid obesity, to be taken by either the ambulance or the air ambulance. It was more than four hours before she got to the hospital." It is known that the deceased woman was on holiday at the time of the car accident – however, it is not yet clear whether her family will seek to make a no win, no fee compensation claim over the incident.
