A cyclist has been charged after causing a road traffic accident that left a motorcyclist with serious personal injuries.
The 19-year-old student had been cycling in the same direction as the motorcyclist who was trying to overtake when he suddenly took a right hand turn into the road.
The unexpected manoeuvre resulted in a collision which caused the motorcyclist to fall from his bike and sustain a broken collar bone in two places.
Cambridge Magistrates' Court heard how the day had been bright and clear and the road had been relatively quiet at the time of the road traffic accident. It was also revealed that the student had been wearing headphones at the time of the incident.
The prosecuting officer commented, "This is a rare charge. I have been in the police force for eight years and never come across it before.
"Given the seriousness of the accident and how badly the victim was hurt, we felt it necessary to prosecute in this case."
The cyclist who studies at Cambridge University was fined £200 and ordered to pay £300 in court costs as well as a £15 victim surcharge as a result of the road traffic accident.
