Family compensated after baby chokes on medical tube
A couple from Staffordshire have been awarded medical negligence compensation after their baby almost choked to death when hospital staff forgot to remove a six inch tube.
Staff at the Stafford Hospital fitted the baby boy, who is now 4-years-old, with an endotracheal tube following his complicated delivery to help with his breathing.
Ten days after the birth the baby began to choke and turn blue in the face. His alarmed mother immediately slapped him on the back and the PVC tube came out of his mouth.
As a result of the incident, the parents of the baby launched a claim for medical negligence compensation against the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust. The couple claimed that their son could have died if not for the fast reaction of his mother.
Fortunately the young boy did not suffer from any long term personal injury following his experience.
The family have since been awarded with a five figure sum in medical negligence compensation.
