European researchers are developing a Collision Warning System (CWS) to help prevent car crashes through an early warning device which will alert drivers to dangers up ahead.
According to the World Health Organisation, 1.2 million people lose their lives in car accidents every year. The CWS will help to reduce this by taking advantage of technology that is already becoming a standard feature in some new cars – GPD and Vehicle to vehicle (V2V).
V2V is a car communication system which can tell drivers the position and movement of cars around them, warn of slow moving traffic and even warn of a vehicle that has braked hard.
The CWS can use information from these two systems to work out where cars around and ahead of the vehicle are. It calculates where they will be in a few seconds time and then warns the driver so that they can adjust their speed accordingly.
If this became a standardised feature in all cars, it would undoubtedly cause a huge reduction in the number of road accidents and consequently the high number of car accident compensation claims that stem from a car crash.
