US international footballer in serious car accident
22-year-old US international footballer Charlie Davies is in a serious condition in a hospital in Washington D.C following car crash injuries sustained in a one-car accident in which his passenger, a young woman, was killed. Although doctors have not ruled out the possibility of the footballer being able to return to the game, it is expected that it will take at least 12 months, as his car crash injuries include broken bones in his left leg and right elbow, facial fractures and a lacerated bladder. Barring a miracle, he will miss out on a place in the US World Cup squad. Davies plays for French side Sochaux. Sochaux's president Alexandre Lacombe commented, "We are in shock. In life you have to know how to put things in perspective. Charlie was close to death and a young woman aged 22 lost her life. His season is over, but what's most important is for him to be out of danger." The US national team, which has already qualified for the world cup, responded to the loss of Davies by posting a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica. Many fans showed Davies their support by holding placards bearing Davies' number 9. It is not known whether any no win, no fee claims will follow as a result of the car crash.
