A Government campaign is hoping to cut the number of drug-driving related car crashes through a TV advert which highlights how police can spot the signs of someone under the influence of drugs.
The TV advert shows a group of teenagers in a car with enlarged eyes to symbolise the dilated pupils which can be a giveaway of drug taking. A passing police car pulls over the car as the caption;"Your eyes will give you away" appears across the screen.
According to the Department of Transport, one in ten young male drivers admit to drug driving. Lord Adonis, transport Secretary said, "It is imperative that drug-driving is made totally socially unacceptable."
Drivers caught under the influence of drugs face up to six months in prison and a £5,000 fine. At the moment there is no equivalent to a roadside breathalyser for drugs so police have to rely on a Field Impairment test which involves asking suspects to carry our various physical or mental tasks.
It is hoped the campaign will help to reduce the number of drug-drive related car crashes which mainly affect male drivers between 17 and 25.
