Car crash compensation news 08/07/2008
Man sentenced over drunk smashA 27-year-old mother who has received a sum of car crash compensation following a terrifying incident involving a drunk driver has spoken about how the ordeal has affected her. The mother, who was 18 weeks pregnant with her third child when the incident happened, had just returned home with her partner and two daughters from a trip to Edinburgh Zoo when a drunk driver careered over the pavement and into her parked car, knocking the woman and one of her daughters over in the process. She explains, "We were thrown onto the pavement. That's all I remember. My partner thought we had been killed because we were both knocked out. "I got up and I realised something was wrong because my partner's car was where my car had been. There was debris everywhere. I just kept screaming. "The driver came up to me smelling of alcohol and slurred something about his brakes not working." Luckily, neither the Scottish mother nor her daughter received any serious injuries, but both were taken to hospital suffering cuts and bruises, with the expectant mother held over night because of high blood pressure. The drunk driver, an Inverness-based 31-year-old, has now received a four year driving ban and 200 hours community service after pleading guilty to drunk and careless driving. The mother received £500 in car crash compensation, while her injured daughter has received a sum of £400 car crash compensation. There is no word as to whether they will also engage the services of a no win, no fee solicitor to commence a civil car accident claim. What we can be sure of however, is that the incident has had a lasting impact. "The girls still remember the accident and are so careful," she said. Adding, "Every time we walk down the street and they see a car coming they say: ‘Be careful mummy in case the man knocks us over again.'"
