In a bid to try to curb the number of car accidents and the number of car crashcompensation claims being made due to crashes caused by young drivers, a Portsmouth fire station held a driving awareness day for boys aged between 13 and 16.
Part of TRAPT's (Teenage Road Accident Prevention Team) driver awareness scheme, the course was targeted at raising awareness of the consequences of reckless driving and involved a car accident simulation to give the youngsters a taste of what it is like to be in a traffic collision.
A spokesperson for the TRAPT team said of the scheme, "It gives the boys an awareness of what could happen if they drive recklessly and also to think about other areas of their lives and the decisions that affect it."
Assistant chief officer Steve Hamm, head of community safety at Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: ''Working in partnership (with the young people) in this way has shown that our position of trust can be used in different ways to lead and inspire members of the community in projects which really do make a difference."
It is hoped that the scheme will help young drivers adopt a responsible attitude towards their driving and it could decrease the number of car accidents involving young people and the number of car crashcompensation claims which are made because of young driver car crashes.
