A Russian gymnast who won a bronze medal in the men's all around discipline at the World Championships held in London recently has died in a car crash as he was returning to his home in Vladimir along the M7 highway.
Yuri Ryazanov was driving his Chevrolet when it was in collision with an Audi, approximately 160 km east of Moscow.
Police believe the 22-year-old gymnast was killed instantly after he lost control of his vehicle and swerved into oncoming traffic. The two occupants of the Audi were also injured.
Initial reports suggest that the involvement of alcohol was not indicated in the car accident, but it is not known whether the young man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
Stunned team-mates and coaches spoke to the press about Ryasanov's death and the probable causes of the car crash, though no conclusions have been made as of yet.
