Car crash claim news 19/04/2010
Government scrappage scheme endsNow that the Government's car scrappage scheme has come to a close, the success of the initiative is beginning to be considered. While it may have had little direct impact on the rate of car crash claims, the scheme has helped to rid the UK's roads of breakdown-prone bangers with poor safety records. The scheme has been hailed an all-out success by the car industry, government and consumers alike. Car sales for February this year were up by 26.4% compared with last year, leading to eight months of consecutive growth. Car production was also up by 62.7% in February, helping secure car manufacturing jobs and helping to restore confidence in the country's fragile economy. Figures show that the scrappage scheme accounted for one-fifth of all new car registrations since the scheme started on May 19 2009, offering £2000 off a new car if the owner's old one was scrapped. The flood of new cars onto the roads should will not only reduce pollution, thanks to their lower CO2 emissions, but it could also improve car crash casualty statistics because of the superior safety technology of new cars. This could lead to a slight decrease in the number of car crash claims for serious personal injuries as car accident victims are better protected.
