Car accident TV ad deemed too graphic

A TV road safety campaign advertisement launched in November 2008, highlighting the dangers of not wearing a seat belt, has been deemed too graphic for pre-watershed screening.

The film shows the effects of a 30mph head on car crash, and focuses on the effects inside the body when not restrained by a seat belt. The camera appears to go inside the car accident victim upon impact and shows the damage done to internal organs.

Research suggests that while very few people never wear a seatbelt, car users still put themselves at risk by occasionally driving without one on. New statistics reveal that one death a day might be saved if all car users wore seat belts every time they travelled.

Road Safety Minister, Jim Fitzpatrick, said, "If you have a crash without wearing a seat belt you actually experience three crashes, even at everyday speeds like 30mph.

"First, your car crashes and stops. Second – because there's nothing to stop you moving – your body carries on and hits the inside of the car. Third, you stop but your internal organs keep moving, hitting the inside of your body and tearing under the force of the impact.

"I hope this hard-hitting new campaign will help everyone realise that they are risking their life whenever they get in a car and don't put their seat belt on."

Since it was made illegal not to wear a seatbelt as a driver or front seat passenger in 1983 an estimated 60,000 deaths and 670,000 serious injuries have been prevented. The campaign film will be used in television, radio, cinema and online advertising in a bid to cut death and serious injury from lower speed car accidents.
