The Department for Transport (DfT) has published National Statistics for road and car accident injury reported to the UK police in the second quarter of 2009.
Provisional estimates reveal a reduction in fatalities - down by nine percent for the year ending June 2009 when compared with the same period in 2008.
The total number of casualties from road traffic accidents, and those killed and seriously injured, was also provisionally shown to be down by seven percent when compared with the 2008 figures.
However, the report notes that a considerable number of non-fatal, non-serious car accident injuries are not reported to police because hospital, survey and compensation claim data indicates higher numbers of car accident victims who have suffered personal injury.
The DfT says its best current estimate for road and car accident casualties annually in the UK, including those that have not been reported to the police, is between approximately 680,000 and 920,000. The central estimate is 800,000.
