Insurance claim possibilities after lorry writes off car
A driver can consider making a car accident compensation claim despite having just third party cover, according to advice by a leading financial journalist.
The motorist was driving along a rural road when a lorry appeared travelling in the opposite direction. The car driver pulled into the side of the road but, as the lorry braked and slowed, the lorry's trailer veered into the car, writing it off.
In a consumer rights column for the Independent newspaper, BBC Radio 4 broadcaster Liz Barclay recommends that the car driver double checks cover provided by her insurance policy.
She said it was possible the motorist has cover for legal costs or recovery of uninsured losses. If so, that would pay for a lawyer to make a claim and negotiate a settlement for the write-off.
*A replacement vehicle can usually be supplied within 4-6 working hours, where there is an admission of liability from the other person’s insurance company. If this person is not known, their insurance details are not known, they are uninsured or there is a potential dispute over who caused the accident, a replacement vehicle cannot be provided.
