Canadian hockey team compensated for fatal bus crash
Survivors and relatives of victims involved in a fatal bus accident which took place in Geneseo, New York in 2005 have been awarded $36 million (around £23 million) in road traffic accident compensation.
The bus had been carrying a Canadian girl's hockey team when it crashed into an illegally parked lorry on the interstate after the bus driver fell asleep. The accident killed four of the passengers and 19 were left with personal injuries.
The driver of the lorry and his wife had stopped to let their sick dog out of the vehicle. The couple broke state laws by parking for non-emergency reasons and not placing flares to alert drivers to the lorry's presence.
Those involved in the incident launched a claim for compensation against the bus company and the company which owned the vehicle the bus had crashed into.
A settlement has now been agreed which will see the bus company payout about 62% in road traffic accident compensation while the lorry owners pay the remainder of the settlement.
