A Bolton man has been jailed over a 2007 car accident that caused £40,000 worth of damage to a Social Services bungalow and his girlfriend's Audi.
Following an argument with his then-pregnant girlfriend, the man took her car - despite not having passed his driving test. He was later spotted speeding by local police, who pursued him, attempting to have him stop.
However, the man lost control of the vehicle on a roundabout, and the car crashed into a bungalow adapted for people with physical and learning difficulties. Debris was scattered into the room, where a carer and resident were sitting; although the resident was unable to walk, the carer managed to get him out of the room without personal injury.
The driver involved in the car crash fled the scene, but later handed himself in to police.
In court, he admitted dangerous driving, aggravated taking of a vehicle, failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident and driving without insurance. He received a two-year driving ban and a one-year jail term as a result of the car accident, but the defending lawyer said that the couple were now reunited and their baby had been born in July.
*A replacement vehicle can usually be supplied within 4-6 working hours, where there is an admission of liability from the other person’s insurance company. If this person is not known, their insurance details are not known, they are uninsured or there is a potential dispute over who caused the accident, a replacement vehicle cannot be provided.
