MIB expose car accident compensation claim fraudsterA man who exaggerated his personal injuries and attempted to claim for £2.3m in car accident compensation has been jailed for four months by the Royal Courts of Justice. The court heard how the 31-year-old had been involved in a car crash in 2004 in Milton Keynes which resulted in two deaths. He then attempted to mislead medical and legal professionals as well as the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB) about the extent of his personal injuries in order to claim £2.3m in compensation from the MIB. The man's sister was also sentenced to 14 days in prison and his foster father received a 14-day sentence suspended for six months for their involvement in the attempted fraud. According to the MIB, while the man's case for compensation developed, he presented himself as almost mute and incoherent. During this time a law firm was instructed to assist with investigations including the surveillance of the man's residence and reviewing his police records. The investigations revealed that the claimant had given a false address and when the new address was put under surveillance it was found that the man was living a completely normal life, going to the gym, talking normally and driving a car. As a result of the evidence, the claim for car accident compensation was immediately withdrawn and the MIB initiated contempt of court proceedings against the man for his false claims.
