Whiplash treatment
If you have suffered a whiplash injury you should seek medical advice as soon as you can to ensure you receive the best possible treatment for your injury.
Whiplash treatment is intended to relieve your pain and reduce the inflammation in the soft tissues of your neck. Your doctor will most likely recommend a treatment that will include some of the following:
- Neck rest
- Bed rest
- Pain relief
- Anti-inflamatory drugs, such as ibuprofen
- Neck massage
- Ice therapy – such as a packet of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel and placed on the neck
- Heat therapy – such as a heated pad or warm towel placed on the neck
The use of a soft cervical collar to immobilise the neck is rarely used by doctors. It is believed to be of minimal benefit in the recovery process, if any at all. Research has shown the whiplash patients who rest for several weeks and wear a soft collar, actually take longer to recover.
You doctor may give you a number of gentle exercises to do, to restore flexibility and movement to the neck. These are usually started 72 hours after the injury and may be combined with heat therapy. Activity can be built up over the course of a week or so as your whiplash injury heals. Even patients with acute pain are usually advised to start their neck exercises within two or three days. Please consult your GP before undertaking any whiplash treatment.
