What is whiplash?
Claims for whiplash compensation account for a very large proportion of legal cases following car accidents in the UK today. But what is it, and why do so many people get it? Very basically, whiplash is caused when a sudden jolt, usually from behind, forces the head forwards and backwards very quickly. This means that the muscles in the neck contract protectively to prevent excessive motion which could otherwise fracture the neck and damage the spinal cord. So, unpleasant and painful as it is, the onset of whiplash almost certainly prevents further, far more serious injury.
What are the symptoms? The symptoms of whiplash vary from person to person but usually include some of the following:
- Neck pain and stiffness
- Shoulder pain
- Lower back pain
- Dizziness
- Arm and hand numbness and/or pain
- Blurred vision
- Tiredness and irritability
How is it treated?
The traditional treatment for whiplash is simply rest and possibly anti-inflammatory medications. Recovery time varies, but it can take as long as 6 months and, although not in itself dangerous, can be very disabling and disruptive to normal life routines. It is because of this disruptiveness that there are so many claims made for whiplash compensation, as the resultant costs and expenses can be significant.
