How do you treat whiplash injury?
Whiplash injuries can range from causing a slight stiffness in the neck to severe neck and back pains and there are a range of methods that you could try to alleviate the pain. So, we have put together some basic treatment advice for you, but remember that you should always check with a doctor first.
Should I move my neck?
Don't be fooled into thinking that keeping your neck still will help to mend the damage. If you are given a head collar try to manage without it after the first few days. Those that stay active, starting with gentle movements then resuming usual use of the neck as soon as possible, are more likely to recover from a whiplash injury quickly and completely.
Seek professional advice from an osteopath, chiropractor or physiotherapist. A physiotherapist can provide you with regulated exercises to help rebuild the strength in the muscles surrounding your neck. But, be aware that too much strenuous exercise may worsen your whiplash injury and you could even develop a more serious personal injury such as spinal cord injury.
Should I use pain relief?
Most medical experts recommend that those suffering from a whiplash injury should take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killers on a regular basis to help reduce both the swelling and the pain of those areas that feel tender.
The use of hot and cold packs applied to the neck muscles can also relieve pain and reduce swelling, some even use acupuncture to relieve the pain.
If you received your whiplash injury following a road accident then you may also find that relaxation exercises such as yoga or a massage from a trained masseuse will relieve any anxieties that you still have about the accident and alleviate some of the pain.
But, remember that if your whiplash injury becomes increasingly painful or you start to experience substantial loss of feeling to your arms and legs you should contact a doctor immediately.
