Useful exercises for whiplash injury
Whiplash injury is the most common form of personal injury to be sustained in a road accident. It is a soft tissue injury which affects the muscles and ligaments in the neck and the spinal joints.
Symptoms include neck and shoulder pain, upper and lower back pain, headaches, dizziness and stiffness to the joints. You may not feel any discomfort straight away but these symptoms could last up to a few months. Those that suffer a whiplash injury will usually make a full recovery although may be more likely to experience arthritis later in life.
Treatment for whiplash injury ranges from pain killers and heat packs to acupuncture and physiotherapy. Here are some gentle exercises that may relieve the stiffness and tension in your neck following a whiplash injury but please seek professional medical advice before you attempt them:
- Stand against a door or wall. Make sure that your head is facing forwards and then roll your eyes so that you are looking towards where you would imagine the two, four, eight and 10 o'clock positions on a clock would be. Repeat five times
- Take one step forward. Bend your head forwards as if taking a bow then gently lift your head so that your head is straight and facing forwards. Repeat five times
- Turn your left head like you would when looking backwards over your shoulder. Imagine following a horizontal line on the wall ahead at eye level and look backwards over your right shoulder. Repeat 5 times
