Are you suffering from whiplash

If you are suffering from neck pains following a car accident, you should seek medical attention immediately so your doctor can make a whiplash diagnosis. Whiplash can occur following even low speed car accidents, as your head is thrown forward and then sharply backward with the jolt of the impact.

If an ambulance attends the accident and there is any chance that you have injured your neck, it is likely that they will take you to hospital , where they will be able to diagnose whiplash or any more serious injuries. As a precaution, they will immobilise your neck with a cervical collar.

You will be seen at the hospital by an A&E consultant, who will examine the functioning of your spinal cord to determine if any injury has been caused. He or she will look at the reflexes at the joints of your arms and legs, your ability to sense touch in different areas of your body and physical strength in your arms and legs.

Before the consultant can make a whiplash diagnosis he or she will also inspect your head and neck for bruises, cuts, and abrasions. Your neck will be checked to ensure that you do not have any pain or tenderness.

The cervical collar will only be removed once the consultant is satisfied with the following:

  • You show normal levels of consciousness
  • You have no apparent muscle weakness
  • You have no numbness or loss of sensation in your limbs
  • You have no tenderness in the back of your neck
  • You have no pain or change of sensation in your back
  • You have other numbness, aches or pain

If the consultant has any concerns the cervical collar will be left in place and they may arrange for x-rays to be taken of your neck, to enable a whiplash diagnosis to be made, or to rule out any bone fractures or other more serious injuries.

The consultant will review your x-rays and if necessary request a CT scan or MRI. If your x-rays are normal, the cervical collar will probably then be removed, and you will be able to go home.
