Qualified motorcyclists help to reduce vehicle accident rates

When it comes to vehicle accidents, motorcycle accident rates are some of the highest on British roads.

Countless personal injuries including head injuries and leg injuries are experienced by motorcyclists everyday. During 2004/2005 more than half of all deaths as a result of road accidents in England and Wales were caused by motorcycle accidents.

Many of these accidents were caused by bikers who had not even received Compulsory Basic Training. Compulsory Basic Training, a theory and practical test should be taken by all motorcyclists to maintain a safe attitude to motorcycling.

Compulsory Basic Training, theory and practical tests
Compulsory Basic Training is designed to prepare motorcyclists for the roads, making them more aware of hazards and keep vehicle accident rates down.

For Compulsory Basic Training you will need your provisional licence and some form of identification to commence training. Training lasts an entire day and is a combination of theory such as a talk on riding safety and practical tuition where an instructor will take you on an accompanied ride on the road. It costs between £70 and £100 and usually includes bike and equipment hire.

Following Compulsory Basic Training you will be required to take a theory test, similar to the one required by car drivers, which costs around £15.50. This can be booked at your local test centre through the Driving Standards Agency.

Once you have passed this you can apply to take your practical test this costs between £45 and £55. The test lasts around 40 minutes and you will be followed by an examiner either in a car or on a motorcycle who will maintain constant radio contact. For more information visit http://www.dsa.gov.uk

The government have taken extra precautions to reduce the amount of vehicle accidents involving motorcycles by encouraging ultra safe riding.

Licences for new riders are restricted to just six penalty points for the first two years, meaning that that just two clicks of a speeding camera will result in you losing your licence. Your licence will then have to be retaken, costing twice as much as the first test.
