Avoiding sustaining head injuries in bicycle and vehicle accidents
Bicycles are becoming a more popular mode of transport. More people are cycling during their leisure time as it is a fantastic way to gain exercise. Also, more people are cycling to work in an effort to cut down on fumes that damage the environment.
When cycling on the roads you are at greater risk of being involved in a vehicle accident and Car Accident Advice Line suggests taking safety precautions. Always make sure you have good, bright lights fitted front and back on your bicycle, wear reflective clothing or reflective bands to make you more visible to other traffic, be very aware of traffic around you and danger spots on the roads, and always wear a cycle helmet to avoid serious personal injuries.
Research has shown that wearing a cycle helmet that fits correctly is likely to reduce the risk of head injury or brain damage by up to 85%. The foam shell of the helmet is designed to absorb the impact of the head hitting the road’s surface and the straps should keep the helmet in place.
We suggest a few tips for buying a good cycle helmet:
- Replace a helmet if it has been dropped onto a hard surface, involved in a bicycle accident, cracks appear in the foam, or the straps fray
- Make sure that it features the kite mark to show it has been tested and corresponds with British standards
- Make sure it fits comfortably and snugly against the head
- Make sure that it is not so heavy that it weighs the head and neck down while riding but not so light that it will offer little protection in a serious bicycle accident
- Choose a bright colour to increase your visibility while on the road
- When fastening the straps make sure that they are not twisted, and fit snugly over the ears (but not covering the ears) and under the chin
