Emergency telephone systems to cut vehicle accident rates
In April 2006 the European Parliament showed concern for the amount of vehicle accidents occurring on our roads and proposed to fit new cars with emergency telephone style systems by 2009.
The aim is that the telephone call technology will be fitted when manufacturing all new cars and may eventually extend to other vehicles.
The technology will work by automatically summoning an ambulance to the location of a car crash or vehicle accident, bringing aid to those who have suffered serious personal injuries and are unable to call the emergency services themselves.
Not only will this innovation save money on health treatment but it will also mean that the emergency services will have more chance of reaching accident scenes in time to treat those with personal injuries and potentially save lives.
Research paid for by the European Commission claims that this could help to save the lives of up to 2,500 people involved in vehicle accidents every year.
