Cyclists cause vehicle accident rates to rise

It seems that the gentle nature of the local cyclist may be on the turn as vehicle accidents at the hands of people on bicycles are beginning to become more common.

When we think of cyclists, an image of a pleasant, 'environmentally aware' chap in Lycra shorts or a vicar doing his pastoral rounds come to mind rather than speed-hungry fiends on two wheels that cause road accidents galore and inflict personal injuries on innocent pedestrians.

More and more cyclists are abusing the Highway Code, taking to the pavements and even failing to stop at red lights. They are especially dangerous in areas that are close to schools. There have been reports of both children and elderly citizens narrowly escaping getting run down in bicycle accidents. One woman received such serious personal injuries to her legs after being mowed down by a bicycle that she has been left disabled.

In some regions local MPs are backing campaigns to stop these wayward cyclists from ignoring traffic lights. Cyclists themselves, in a bid to resume their once untainted reputation, have set up an online petition: Use Your Head - Stop at Red (www.stopatred.org).

They hope by taking action and increasing awareness of road safety amongst the cycling community the number of vehicle accidents caused by cyclists will once again return to zero.
