Road accident risks of driving abroad
We think about hiring a car when we jet off on our holidays so that we can jaunt around,
visiting attractions and seeing a bit more of the country’s culture. But, have we ever thought about the
implications of reckless driving and road accidents when in
a foreign country.
Under the current road safety law foreign drivers in the UK can get away without paying
penalties for reckless driving and there is no way of keeping them in the country to ensure that they pay
fines for offences such as speeding, drink driving and use of mobile phones. All of these offences are
potential causes of road accidents, increasing the risk of
personal injuries sustained and even fatalities on
the British roads.
The government intends to modify this law and has put forward the following proposals:
- A new system of endorsement of driving licences
- A deposit scheme to ensure that drivers without a UK residence or other satisfactory UK address do
not escape penalties for a specific range of offences
- Enable disclosure of driver and vehicle data to foreign authorities
This Road Safety Bill should go some way to discouraging reckless driving from foreign
visitors in the UK and may also act to decrease the amount of
road accidents as a result.
