Police are investigating a fatal car crash in Essex which happened while the car was being followed by a police patrol car.

Police said a patrol spotted a car acting suspiciously in Pilgrims Lane, Purfleet, Essex, early on Sunday morning and they followed it. They caught up with the car which had crashed on the A1306 and found the driver dead at the car crash scene.

A passenger was taken to Basildon Hospital with head injuries and the matter was reported to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Essex police are carrying out their own internal inquiry and want to speak to the occupants of a white Suzuki Sanatana soft top car seen near the fatal car crash and four teenage boys who were on a bridge overlooking the A1306 road.
