Car crash victim fined for leaving wrecked vehicle
A car crash victim left with a whiplash injury has been punished with two parking tickets for abandoning his wrecked vehicle.
Peter Bishop was hit head-on by joyriders in Edinburgh city centre, and lucky to have avoided more serious personal injuries, was told by police to leave his battered vehicle at the side of the road.
But when the 37-year-old returned to take his vehicle away, he discovered that traffic wardens had issued two penalty notices within just two hours, despite the car having a 'Police Aware' sticker on the window.
Immediately appealing to the city council, parking chiefs agreed to overturn one ticket, but insisted that the other, issued for leaving the car in a bus lane, had to be paid.
Talking to press despite his whiplash injury, Mr Bishop told how he felt aggrieved, saying, "A BMW came racing down the wrong side of the road. It smashed straight into my car and the driver and passengers jumped out and ran away.
"The suspension on my car was completely ruined and the car couldn’t be driven on the roads, so the police asked me to move it to the side of the street."
"First thing on Monday morning I arranged for the vehicle to be picked up by staff from my garage and they got there at 10am . But earlier that morning, Enforcers had slapped two fines on my car."
Council parking bosses have refused to cancel the second ticket, and Mr Bishop has grudgingly agreed to pay his fine.
