Whiplash injury explanation
A whiplash injury can occur in a car accident that happens at as low a speed as 5 mph, and is caused when the neck is jolted very quickly forwards and backwards. It is often difficult to see exactly what damage has been done to the neck, as the whiplash injury is often “invisible” damage done to the ligaments, nerves and joints.
It is thought that whiplash injury could be prevented in many road accidents if motorists adjusted their head restraints correctly. Studies have found that up to 72% of motorists drive with their head restraint at the wrong height.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROSPA) advises that to reduce the likelihood of developing a whiplash injury in a car accident, your head restraint should be positioned so that it is as near the back of your head as possible and the top is at a level above the top of the your head.
