2006 THINK! campaign to decrease number of motorcycle accidents
As reports of serious motorcycle accidents and subsequent motorcycle accident claims are on the increase the government took action in January 2006 by introducing a television and radio campaign aimed at drivers in urban areas to be more aware of motorcyclists. This runs alongside an outdoor poster campaign designed to remind bikers how to make sure they are seen when amongst the traffic.
This THINK! television advert has been devised to encourage drivers to be more vigilant of bikers. The ad shows the lead up to a vehicle accident at a T-junction where the driver of a car pulls out from a side road onto a main road after only taking a quick glance for oncoming traffic. Next, a motorcycle that was already travelling along the main road ploughs into the side of the car.
A calm voice then asks 'How close does a biker have to be before you see them?' and the scenario is replayed with the car driver taking more time to look properly and the motorbike passing safely.
The end line then reads 'THINK! Take longer to look for bikes'. The imagery is powerful and the message both simple and clear which suggests that it will have a tremendous impact on Britain's motorists. But, it remains to be seen whether this campaign will see a decrease in vehicle accidents involving two-wheeled vehicles, specifically motorcycle accidents.
